David J. Getsy
Goldabelle McComb Finn Distinguished Professor of Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago

David J. Getsy is the Goldabelle McComb Finn Distinguished Professor of Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  He writes about modern and contemporary art, with an emphasis on queer and transgender methods for art and art history.  His books have examined the changing status of the human figure in modern sculpture, and they include Body Doubles: Sculpture in Britain, 1877–1905 (Yale 2004), Rodin: Sex and the Making of Modern Sculpture (Yale 2010), and Abstract Bodies: Sixties Sculpture in the Expanded Field of Gender (Yale 2015). He has edited the volumes Sculpture and the Pursuit of a Modern Ideal in Britain, c.1880–1930 (Ashgate 2004); From Diversion to Subversion: Games, Play, and Twentieth-Century Art (Penn State 2011), Scott Burton: Collected Writings on Art and Performance, 1965–1975 (Soberscove 2012), and Queer, an anthology of artists’ writings, for the Whitechapel Gallery’s “Documents of Contemporary Art” book series (MIT 2016).  His current projects focus on archive-based recoveries of genderqueer and queer performance art in 1970s New York City.  His book Queer Behavior: Scott Burton’s Performances of the 1970s is forthcoming in 2022 from University of Chicago Press, and he is writing a new book based on the 2018 retrospective he curated for the Leslie-Lohman Museum, New York, titled Rubbish and Dreams: The Genderqueer Performance Art of Stephen Varble.  For the 2020–2021 academic year, he is the Terra Foundation Visiting Professor of American Art at the John F.
